Young Yong's Catabatic Journey: Notes on Li Yongping's The Origin of Kapuas River

Against the backdrop of Joseph Conrad's colonial stories that take place on the equator, this essay analyses Li Yongping's literary style, his depiction of Borneo and his reflections on the identity of Borneo Chinese, as presented in his latest novel The Origin of Kapuas River. These topics are discussed from the perspectives of catabasis, initiation, homecoming and pedophilia.
