In his time Liu Xiaochao enjoyed an eminent reputation; he "did not defer to anyone except to Xie Tiao to whom he bowed in respect." When Xiao Gang was still the princely heir, he wrote to his younger brother (Xiao Yi, at the time the king of Eastern Xiang) saying that Xie Tiao's poetry really caps the style of narrative writing. Although Zhong Rong criticized these people who accorded honors, such as "Xie Tiao walks a unique path throughout history," as "followers with light steps," nevertheless he tacitly revealed that at the time Xie Tiao actually received high honors in poetry. Moreover, Zhong Rong himself admitted the outstanding excellence of Xie Tiao's beautiful and elegant poetry. This essay adduces several examples of the use of space to glimpse the poetic mastery of Xie Tiao.
