A Discussion of the Revision in the Han wen qi on the Assessments of the Guwen xiyi

Lin Yunming, a scholar in the early Qing, became known as a literary critic, and his books such as Zhuangzi yin, Han wen qi, Chuci deng and Guwen xiyi are known today. From youth, Lin Yunming loved reading the writings of Han Yu; while still young he already had produced a draft of Writings of Han with notes and comments, but before it could be set up in printer's blocks, it was destroyed in a fire in the chaos of an uprising. From 1682 to 1687, the first and second chapters of Guwen xiyi were published as books, in which the writings of Han Yu were covered in forty-seven sections (nineteen in the first book and twenty-eight in the second). In 1690, Lin Yunming re-issued a revised book on the writings of Han Yu, entitled Han wen qi, published with appended material until 1693. There are 159 sections in Han wen qi; the number of essays being three times that of Guwen xiyi, and containing all the early notes and comments on the writings of Han Yu. However, the Han wen qi does not simply reproduce the chapters and sections established in the Guwen xiyi; there are some revisions here and there. For example, "Song Dong Shaonan xu," "Song Li Yuan gui Pangu xu," and "Song Yinyuan Waishi hui Hu xu," etc., all have different comments at the end of the respective sections. Comparing the two works, one can discover the steps on the journey of Lin Yunming towards understanding and interpreting the writings of Han Yu. Unfortunately, since the time of Kangxi, not much attention is paid to Han wen qi; thus it is difficult for scholars to explore its background. This essay aims at better knowledge of the reception of the writings of Han Yu in the early years of the Qing dynasty.
