Chen Yingzhen and Hong Kong Literary Journals (1960s-1970s)

With respect to the case of Chen Yingzhen, this paper examines the relationship between the course of Chen's creativity and the literary journals of Hong Kong during the 1960s and the 1970s, in an attempt to highlight the significance of Taiwanese literature in Hong Kong. Hao Wang Jiao (Cape of Good Hope), one of the important literary journals promoting modernism in Hong Kong since the early 1960s, shared the same modernist literary background with Chen when his first work was published in Taiwan, although beyond this his work further showed his concerns and insights on social reality. Pan Ku, an important literary journal accommodating different viewpoints in its early stage during the 1960s, included the prose works of Chen in its volume 18; especially in his essays, realistic criticism with a clear political stance was notable beyond the modernist style. When Chen was sent to prison in 1968 and received less attention from Taiwan, Si Ji (Four Seasons), another Hong Kong literary journal, published "Lei Lei," a short story strongly concerned about both Taiwan and Hong Kong, as a great gesture of support to Chen. In the late 1970s, Da Mu Zhi (Big Thumb) published "Yexing Huoche (Night Truck)," which marked a milestone in the course of Chen's creativity, in that social criticism was further strengthened with a profound discussion of Taiwanese ethnic problems. This masterpiece impressed Hong Kong readers regarding the political status of Taiwan at that extraordinary time.
