This paper focused on the "Ideal Persons" in the Zhuang Zi to analyze Guo Xiang's interpretation of the work. The Zhuang Zi describes the Holy Man, the Spiritual Man, and the Perfect Man as those who have cultivated themselves. In his annotation of the Zhuang Zi, Guo Xiang refers to the Holy Man, the Spiritual Man, and the Perfect Man as three aspects of what constitutes the "Ideal Persons", and he associates these aspects with rulers in particular. This difference in the interpretation of the Ideal Persons between Zhuang Zi and Guo Xiang can be attributed to Guo's use of the Zhuang Zi to communicate the idea of "inward cultivation and outward governance."
