Verbal Interaction of Brad Cohen in Front of the Class: Relevance, Frames and Footing

This study has examined how Brad Cohen, an interlocutor with Tourette's syndrome in the docudrama Front of the Class, sought relevance and based on this meta-representational ability, utilized frames and footing for invoking his social identity. It is shown that though the vocal tics were maintained by automatic and positive reinforcement, and socially threatening, cognitive-pragmatic skills were witnessed in Brad who could relate to other people and apply conversational strategies such as contextualization cues and discourse identities to negotiation. Scripted dialogue is valuable not because it represents spontaneous conversation but because it provides an alternative lens through which we can view the complex hierarchies of inferring process in a speaker with genetic disease and use this meta-psychological phenomenon as a base for interpreting such a speaker's communicative competence.
