The main purpose of this research was to understand junior high school students' educational aspirations before they leave the school and to find out the factors that may influence their choice of the schools. It also might provide reference to school guidance. The sample contained 863 third-grade students of Taipei Municipal junior high schools, including 461 male students and 402 female students. The resources of informations were mainly from questionnaire study they were: (1) Questionnaire on Junior High School Students' Educational Aspirations. (2) Self Attitude Questionnaire. (3) Achievement Motivation Test. Contingency correlation coeffient, chi-square test, and simple randomized design of ANOVA were used for statistical analysis of data. The following were the major findings: 1. About 47% of the subject students expect to enter junior college; senior high school, 30%; vocational high school, 24%. But most of the parents expect their children to enter senior high school. 2. The factors influencing students made their choice were future outlook, adjusting to personal abilities and interest, the cost of fee. 3. Individual factors influencing students' educational aspirations and the choice of schools included intelligence, academic achievement, self-concept of ability and academic motivation. 4. Environmental factors influencing students' educational aspirations and school choice included family socio-economic status (such as parents' education level, vocational status and total income) and parental attitude toward children's education. As to school factors, the peer group s opinion and the teachers' expectation played important roles, too. 5. Beside family factors, social factors and school factors, individual factors played the most important part in influencing students' aspirations and the school choice. But the informations provided through the guidance practice during the school were the most significant data for students to form their aspirations and. choices. Six suggestions were made according to the conclusions: 1. In order to help students understand themselves better, junior high schools should strengthen guidance practices. 2. Schools should help students to have a better understanding of the educational object and contents of the junior colleges, senior schools and vocational schools. 3. Parents and teachers should have proper concepts so as to instruct the students to form appropriate educational aspirations and to make their choice. 4. In order to let the parents make appropriate expectation on their children, school should help them to have a better understanding of children's abilities, academic achievements, and interests. 5. A complete vocational or technical education system should be founded, so as to provide more chances of continuing study for vocational school students. 6. The social value system and vocational concept should be properly cultivated.
