摘要

The Metamorphosis, a masterpiece of Kafka's short stories, has always attracted the attention of critics. The studies of the transformation of the protagonist Gregor Samsa are as numerous as stars. Most people only focus on the alienation of Gregor and consider him as a victim of the materialized world. However, little attention has been paid to the mystery of the vermin, namely, why does Gregor have to become a beetle rather than anything else? So, in this paper, the author will only explore the reason why Gregory became a beetle, but also analyze the alienation of interpersonal relationship revealed by the text. The novel opens with an eery description: "One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin.". The transformation is accepted as a given fact, and even until Gregor's bleak death, he did not think about the reason for his transformation. The author never discloses or implies the connection between the protagonist and the vermin. When Kafka wrote The Metamorphosis, he chose the vermin not by accident, but by reflection. In fact, the destinies of vermin and Gregor are somewhat coincidences. From the delicate relationship between Gregor and the vermin, it can be understood why Kafka chose the vermin to express the theme.
