Because of the traditional family concept and the busy work of parents, intergenerational upbringing has become a common social phenomenon in urban and rural areas of our country. Junior high school students are facing problems such as middle school entrance examination, adolescence, early love and so on, which can easily lead to psychological problems such as anxiety and depression, among which the psychological pressure brought about by the entrance examination is greater. Based on the data of Chinese education tracking survey, this paper analyzes the influence of intergenerational upbringing on the pressure of junior high school students to go to school, which is beneficial to the development of students' mental health. The study found that 30.5% of ninth graders chose intergenerational upbringing, of which 6.9% were completely intergenerational and 23.6% were incomplete intergenerational. Thirty‐six per cent of ninth graders in intergenerational families feel more stressed to go to school. The ordered logit regression model shows that intergenerational upbringing has a significant effect on the pressure of students in the ninth grade of junior high school, and the regression coefficient is positive, indicating that intergenerational upbringing will increase the pressure of students to go to school. Further robustness analysis shows that the results of the model are still significant. Personal heterogeneity test showed that boys and ninth graders with good health were under greater pressure to go to school. The family heterogeneity test found that the ninth graders who lived with grandparents, were not only children and had many books at home were under greater pressure to go to school. The heterogeneity test of school performance characteristics found that the ninth graders with better grades were under greater pressure.
