Language learning is best achieved when the students play an active role in the process. Being active means that students cannot just be given information; they must have opportunities to internalize information in ways which are meaningful to them. Being active is related to another approach‐‐‐problem‐solving which best aids learning. In order to apply these approaches to language learning, learning strategies should be used. In this paper, two major learning strategies are discussed. They are cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies.
