Chinese language education has always been a public concern in Malaysia, however, research about the content of Chinese language education, especially about textbooks are rare. This article wish to explore the changes and development in the Chinese language education from 1960s through to 2000s, through analyzing the textbooks commonly used in the Chinese National Type Schools in the same period. It was found that there are numerous changes and developments reflecting the changes in the Malaysia society (especially in the Chinese community) and education policies. The earlier textbooks are more concern with transmission of Chinese culture, while teaching in the later period has become more technical and more like second language teaching.
