马来亚大学东亚图书馆藏中文古籍及其铃印探析

摘要

马来亚大学始创于1949年，而后1953年设立中文系。1953－1954年由创系主任贺光中二次赴日本与香港等地购置13万册中文书籍，其中不少古籍珍本；当时属于东南亚首屈一指，更自称海外名列第七的中文古籍收藏。1962年吉隆坡的马来亚大学与新加坡的新加坡大学正式分家，这批古籍主要由新加坡大学继承，仅几千册转移至马来亚大学。而自1962年马来亚大学中文系创办以来，社会亦捐献几千册中文线装古籍。然而可惜的是，1970年代以来的数十年间缺乏合理保存与管理，更无认识其文献价值的图书馆员，乃至终于部分损毁丢弃。目前所存亦仅其1970年代初之部分。本文从梳理新加坡的马来亚大学最初入藏一批珍贵古籍开始，以至现如今吉隆坡马来亚大学的古籍保存状况，分析其中个人与社会因素之影响及于一地一校图书馆古籍珍本的入藏与保存。其中不免各方因素环环相扣，纵其眼下毫不起眼，仍不应隐没当初之弘毅负重。而如今劫余幸存却仍无以妥善保存之马来亚大学东亚图书馆内约五千册线装古籍，唯有翻阅之际偶现的那一方方旧藏家之铃印还能多少勾勒当初的风光。

The University of Malaya was established in 1949, while the Chinese Department was set up in 1953. During 1953-1954, the then head of department Dr Ho K C, purchased 130,000 Chinese books from Japan and Hong Kong, which comprised many rare collections. That made its Chinese collections the best in Southeast Asia, and even boasted to be number seventh in the world outside China. In 1962, University of Malaya and University of Singapore became independent universities, and these rare collections mainly remained in Singapore, while a small portion was transferred to Kuala Lumpur. Since the setup of Chinese Department at the Kuala Lumpur University of Malaya in 1962, it has received donations of Chinese books from the society, including some rare collections. However, due to mismanagement and mishandling of these collections since the 1970s, in addition to the lack of library personnel with ample knowledge of the collection, many were destroyed or even disposed of. This paper chronicles the historical development of these rare collections in the libraries of University of Malaya, and analyses the effects of personal and societal influences that shaped the resultant collections of libraries. These influences were interlocked such that even the present collection may not seem impressive, but still deep within laid the whole weightage of its historical journey. Presently these rare collections of around 5,000 volumes, which had survived the many destructive means, are still in need of a proper preservation. And it is only when flipping through the pages and occasioned upon the seals by previous owners of old that at may yet flash by a glimpse of its past glory.
