China's digital economy is developing rapidly, which brings new changes to other fields, but at the same time, environmental problems are becoming more and more prominent. So can the much‐heralded digital economy help reduce carbon emissions? In view of this, this paper uses panel data of four provinces in the Yangtze River Delta from 2011 to 2019 to conduct empirical research, with a view to discussing the impact and mechanism of carbon emissions in the digital economy. The results show that: (1) The carbon emission effect of the digital economy shows a trend of first increasing and then decreasing; (2) The digital economy has improved the industrial structure, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
