The laying performance of Tsaiya ducks raised in the duck house with water pad and forced ventilation and traditional duck house in the hot season

The objectives of this study were to compare the laying performance of laying Tsaiya ducks raised in the duck house with water pad and forced ventilation (WF) versus traditional duck house (TR). There were three replicates in each treatment with 50 ducks in each replicate. Egg production, mortality, and environmental temperature and humidity were recorded throughout this study. Feed intake, body weight, egg weight, eggshell strength, fertility and hatchability were also determined. The results showed that wind velocities on the anterior side (close to water pads), middle and posterior side (close to fans) in the WF duck house were 2.0, 1.9, and 1.7 m/sec, respectively. The ambient temperature difference between anterior and posterior sides of the WF duck house was dependent on the outside environmental temperature, with the range of 0.4-2.3℃ Higher relative humidity in the WF duck house was observed. Feed intake in the WF group was significantly higher than that in the TR group (P < 0.05). Egg production in the WF group was 81.6%, which was significantly higher than 78.3% in the TR group (P < 0.05). In addition, egg production in the WF group was more stable than that in the TR group. The eggshell strength in the TR group at 23 and 28 weeks of age was significantly higher than that in the WF group (P < 0.05). However, this difference was not observed at 33 and 38 weeks of age (P > 0.05). Fertility and hatchability were not different between the two groups. Mortalities in the WF and TR group were 2.0% and 5.3%, respectively. In conclusion, ducks raised in the duck house with water pad and forced ventilation had higher egg production and lower mortality than those in the traditional duck house.
