Two Narratives on Hong Kong-Style Cantonese: The Linguistic Politics of "Chinese Textbook" by Civil Society

Starting from the first Chinese language movement in 1960-1970, Hong Kong-style Cantonese has occupied an important sphere in Hong Kong's cultural politics. For several decades, the cultural values reflected by the language of Hong Kong people has always been supported by "Chineseness" in the narratives of scholars, commentators, and politicians, such as Ho Man Wui, Tam Shek Wing, and Chin Wan. In sum, these values are nativistic to preserving Hong Kong-style Cantonese. Meanwhile, some netizens have recently been rethinking the relationship between Chineseness and Hong Kong-style Cantonese through various networked practices, including an attempt to replace Chineseness with "pure Hong Kongness." Considering the concept of "minor literature" by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, this work argues that the two narratives of Hong Kong-style Cantonese pave the way for the newly developed Hong Kongness and locality as the competing powers against Communist Chineseness.
