摘要


本研究依索敘爾的符號學理論來探討臺灣歷史中檳榔符號所代表之作用及其意義。將檳榔分成檳榔樹、檳榔葉、檳榔子、檳榔花(穗)及檳榔心,5個部分做為符具;檳榔的作用分為日常生活、婚約儀式及祭祀儀式3種;檳榔的符指依據不同的族群,原住民的平埔族或漢人,在不同時期,具有不同的符指,如建材、器皿、愛意、財產、身分意象、藥材、臺灣意象……等。並探討符指與符具間為肖像性關系或任意性關系。觀察臺灣目前檳榔文創設計,多著重在檳榔元素的外觀上,文創商品的發想也以檳榔的肖像性關系為主,未來可在如何將檳榔的各種符指延伸運用於文創商品上做進一步的探討。

This research aims to explore the role and significance of the betel nut symbol in Taiwan's history based on Saussure's semiotic theory. Betel nut is divided into betel nut tree, betel nut leaf, betel nut, betel nut flower and betel nut heart, a total of five parts. The functions of betel nut are divided into three types: daily life, marriage contract ceremony and sacrificial ceremony. Ethnic minorities, that is, different ethnic group have different signs in different periods. The associative relations or arbitrary relationship between signifier and signified is also discussed. In the future, how to expand the various signs of betel nut and use it in cultural and creative products can be further discussion.
