A Study on the Influence of Work Stress on Decision Quality and Work Performance: The Moderating Effect of Stress Coping Behavior among Managers in Taiwanese SMEs

After the major economic crisis caused by pandemic, many businesses, especially small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), have faced challenges due to changes in people's lifestyles. This has led to several businesses needing to adapt to the changing societal landscape. Besides facing competition from multiple directions, SMEs may also have certain factors or limitations that need to be considered in decision-making. Therefore, managers in SMEs business are under a great deal of stress and pressure, and this work-related stress can potentially affect the quality of their decision-making and ultimately impact the work performance. This study examines the relationship between work stress, stress coping behaviors, work performance, and decision quality among managers in the context of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Taiwan. Self-assessment online questionnaires were distributed among managers in the business, and quantitative analysis was performed. The results obtained indicate that work stress has a negative effect on decision quality and work performance, while decision quality positively correlates to work performance. Additionally, the results illustrate that the decision quality mediates the effect of work stress on work performance. Lastly, it was found that stress coping behavior can weaken the effect of work stress on decision quality.
