A Brief Workplace Education Intervention to Improve Pain Literacy in Physiotherapists: A Novel Use of the Pain and Movement Reasoning Model

摘要

The Pain and Movement Reasoning Model (PMRM) is a clinical reasoning tool based on a biopsychosocial approach. Pain literacy emphasizes access to and understanding and application of pain science. This brief communication reports on the key findings of a study that explored the effect of brief workplace training, using the PMRM, on the pain literacy of Australian physiotherapists. To achieve this, a blended learning pain education intervention was developed to introduce participants to contemporary concepts of pain and the application of the PMRM. The evaluation included questionnaires capturing pain knowledge and pain attitudes and beliefs, focus groups, interviews, and evidence submitted by participants of their pain reasoning. Participants reported that the learning was convenient and appropriate. Questionnaire scores suggest a shift by participants towards biopsychosocial thinking. Descriptions from focus groups and interviews formed themes, indicating new understandings of pain and enhanced clinical practice. However, further research using a more refined methodology is needed.
