Mind-nature theory is one of the core theories in Chinese Buddhism, humanistic Buddhism has a modern interpretation about the mind-nature theory which is different from the traditional Buddhism. The master Taixu and Yinshun made systematical interpretation and integration to the mind-nature theories of the various sectarians in Buddhism, so as to eliminate the differences in mind-nature theories , so the center task of Buddhist practices becomes how to promote Buddhism to adapt to modern society in the premise of insisting the fundamental Buddha teachings. Humanistic Buddhism mainly made modern interpretation of mind-nature theory in the following aspects: to improve the human nature and life as the focal point; emphasize social consciousness, combine the improvement of human nature with social transformation, renew the meanings of pure land and mind-nature; practice Buddha way in human experience; and so on. The modern interpretation of the mind-nature theory also determines that humanistic Buddhism has its obvious modern characteristics in the practice ways, namely, the nature of human, life, ethics, happiness, fusion and openness.
