The Venerable Monk Xuyun (1840?-1959), although generally thought of as a Chan monk, studied the Tiantai system of Buddhism under the renowned Master Rongjing for many years, and was also an advocate for the Pure Land method of Buddha recitation. Indeed, it has been stated that he was considered for the title of Thirteenth Patriarch of the Pure Land School however that title went to Xuyun's contemporary, the Venerable Monk Yinguang (1861 - 1940). This article will look to consider Xuyun's thoughts on, advocation of, and cultivation practices of the Chan and Pure Land Dharma Doors. It will also explore Chan / Pure Land advocates throughout Chinese Buddhist history, in addition to examining other important monks throughout Xuyun's lifetime, and will survey the history of Buddhism in China during Xuyun's lifetime.
