In this article I will discuss the social background of Master Taixu's first trip to Singapore in 1926, primarily based on material of local newspapers. The visit was mainly promoted by the Dharma Talk Society of Sin Chew(星洲講經會) , the Buddhist Youth Society (佛化新青年會)and the local Civil organizations, chambers of commerce, clan associations in Singapore. Due to the exclusiveness of Buddhist Sangha of Southern Min, the visit itself was not particularly successful, but it enabled the Master Taixu's geographical expansion of his influences from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, and Beijing to the southern coastal area of China. In this article, the author stresses the importance of some contingent elements in the history of modern Buddhism and the particularity of its mode of transmission.
