The Significance of Ancient Chinese Official Learning to Modern Chinese Higher Education

摘要

The most effective way to inherit civilization is to popularize education, it is unreliable for us to keep culture in the hands of a few elites. Our progenitors have early recognized that only universal education can inherit our civilization with a long history. Schools in ancient China were divided into two major systems: one is official learning, and the other is private learning. The official education in ancient China refers to the school education system was directly established and governed by the central government or the local government according to local administrative divisions. Though the official learning is the ruling tool of imperial power. The author think it still have positive impact on Modern Chinese Higher Education. It is mainly in two aspects: one is the influence of ancient educational thought on the cultivation of modern talents. For example, Confucius taught students in accordance with their aptitude. The second is the ancient school management, such as its study tour system, academic freedom and open education, which plays an important guiding role in modern school management, especially in the management of institutions of higher learning.
