Among critiques on the special Chinese art of calligraphy the Shu p'u (Treatise on Calligraphy) by Sun Kuo-t'ing of Tang stands out as a standard work for learners by virtue of its exquisite penmanship as well as its competent theory. This essay first asserts that the Shu p'u in its current form is unabridged; then analyzes its calligraphy and different printings; and, finally, demonstrates the true value of the work.
