論明憲宗朱見深之婚變

The Marriage Life of Emperor Hsien-tsung (1448-1487) : Inner-court Politics of Ming China

並列摘要

Chu Chien-shen, known as Hsien-tsung, ascended the throne in 1464 at the age of sixteen. A girl from the Wu family was decreed by the Empress Dowager in the fourth moon to be Hsien-tsung's empress. The royal wedding took place in the seventh moon and the honey-moon lasted less than a month. The emperor, long before his marriage, already had intimate relation with one of his imperial woman from the Wan family. After the empress discovered this secrecy she had her flogged without mercy. The emperor was very indignant when he was informed. He then expelled his empress from the palace with a pretext that his late father, emperor Ying-tsung, had selected a girl from the Wang family to be his empress and it was eunuchs Niu Yü and Wu Hsi who wilfully chose the girl from the Wu family to replace her. After this incident, Lady Wan was made imperial concubine and she became a dominant figure in the inner and outer court through-out the reign of Hsien-tsung.
