Break the Taboo: The Creation and Interpretation of Sexuality and Gender Issues in the Contemporary Taiwanese Opera, "Duan Xiu"

Yi Xin opera troupe's, "Duan Xiu," introduces homosexual romance into contemporary drama. Its third run on the stage had garnered many accolades and reactions, which indicates that there is a seemingly growing interest in and discussion of gender and sexuality issues in recent years. This study traces the origins of the opera to the "Book of Han: Ning Xing Biography," in which Liu Xin, or Emperor Ai of the Han dynasty, "uses his sword to cut his sleeve" in order to move away from his lover, Dong Xian, without awakening him. It examines how "Duan Xiu" was developed from a historical fact and subsequently integrated with the unswerving love and faith of a "phoenix" for the composition of the entire drama. Furthermore, the study explores the deconstruction of the contemporary taboo of homosexuality by the opera and considers the resonating message of equality presented by the opera in the name of love and performance. The present study explores three main aspects of "Duan Xiu." First, the study examines the production methodology, the interpretative advantages and disadvantages, and the benefits of these factors for the development of the operatic genre and awareness of the raised issues. Second, the study analyzes the instability of a country due to the abdication of duty by the king rather than interpreting the relationship between the king's favor and a sycophant as causal and a straightforward tragedy that revolves around the notion that the king cannot have both his country and his love. Finally, this study considers historical facts from a bisexual perspective and argues that "Duan Xiu" searches for common ground among perceived "differences" to find a consensus on the issue of sexuality and gender; however, homosexual comrades must still work harder.
