Su Shi's countryside poems portray the idyllic countryside life and pastoral landscape. Besides allowing readers to appreciate the countryside's way of life of that period, Su had also, through his bold writing style, invented an ingenious countryside poetic style with notable features. This paper thus seeks to build on past interpretations by applying the Law of Organisation: Seven Major Rules of Gestalt Theory and by the means of mind maps to analyse Su Shi's five-stanza "Huan Xi Sha", a poem rich in imagery associated with the countryside. Mind map is produced to illustrate the development of a system of imagery from single imagery to imagery grouping, as a way to further understand the integrity of the poem. It is also hoped that this new method of interpreting poems will enhance the effectiveness of teaching poetry and allow students to master key ideas in the poems by undertaking a systematic phenomenological analysis while reading poetry.
