Energy Efficient Multi-channel MAC Protocol in Wireless Ad Hoc Network

IEEE 802.11 standard [1] provides multiple channels for use. However, it doesn’t have any multi-channel medium access control (MAC) protocols. Therefore, multi-channel MAC protocols in wireless Ad Hoc network have received much attention in recent years. Most of these MAC protocols focus on the throughput improvement. However, they don’t consider the power consumption carefully. The power saving issue needs to be considered because the battery power is a constrained resource in wireless Ad Hoc network. To achieve high energy efficiency in multi-channel wireless Ad Hoc network, we propose a MAC protocol to save energy. First, we improve the negotiation scheme in ad hoc traffic-indication map (ATIM) window by fully utilizing multiple channels and the coordinators scheme. Second, we use scheduling mechanism in Data window to avoid contention. The scheduling algorithm allows more tasks to be assigned and reduces the power consumption. We simulate three different traffic load scenarios. The results show that our protocol achieves high energy efficiency.
