Margaret Atwood’s speculative fiction works in the MaddAddam trilogy consists of the novels Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, and MaddAddam. The criticism of Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy has been extensive and diverse, yet much of it agrees that it features dystopian narratives that depict the collapse of human civilization. This study situates the MaddAddam trilogy in the context of Anthropocene imaginings, demonstrating how the trilogy provides insights into socio-political, economic, scientific, and technological problems of human centeredness while also indicating a future in which humans and nonhumans could coexist. My introduction explores how Atwood reoriented her concerns from feminism to humanity’s control over the environment in the Anthropocene era. Chapter one examines how Atwood criticizes a corporation-controlled world in which scientists are capable of terrible, earth-changing errors, while also exploring alternatives from an ecofeminist perspective that resists capitalism and patriarchy. Chapter two suggests that Atwood imagines the future Anthropocene world as a practical utopia in which humans can build meaningful and ethical relationships with nonhumans.
