This research focuses on the implementation of a portable assistant device with the characteristics of remote monitoring and locating function. This portable device has been designed to assist patients with chronic diseases in the out-of-hospital monitoring. In addition, it can transmit locating information from the Global Positioning System (GPS) and tell patients where they are right now via its voice interface. It also can return the location of the patients to the paramedics via Global Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network. Integrating with a digital signal processor (DSP) and other modules, this portable assistant device can provide the long-term monitoring and navigation without disturbing patients’ activities of daily living. Moreover, this proposed device with GPS can help patients to get used to the unfamiliar and familiar environments. This assistant device can provide the remote monitoring and continuously long-term recording patients’ vital signs. Moreover, this device can inform an emergence station if the patient is in danger or encounters other accidents, and then an ambulance will be sent to rescue his life. By doing this, it can increase the efficiency and survival rates many times. In addition, when the patient is at home, he can use this device to have a simple inspection of his physical signals and sent this data to the hospital, and then the physicians or nurses will analyze it and send him an instant report via telephone, fax machine or e-mail. We have completed the client part and built the connection between the GSM network and the Internet to transmit the information through the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). We will continue to achieve the server part and have a clinic trial to validate the proposed device in the future.
