This thesis aims to explain the relation between happiness and virtue from contemporary virtue ethics, and mainly focus on whether virtue can promote happiness. First, this thesis discusses the conception of happiness, and attempts to find an appropriate approach to define it. Second, this thesis considers the conception of virtue, including the standard of virtue and the debate on the unity of virtue. Third, this thesis argues that cultivating virtue can assist us to attain happiness, and moreover, virtue is the necessary condition for happiness. But virtue cannot be the sufficient condition for happiness. Finally, this thesis argues that everyone can truly cultivate virtue if he or she intends to achieve happiness.
