A Study on Reading Pleasure and Seeking Behavior of Female Romance Readers

Romance novels are common pleasure reading materials. As a popular genre of fiction, it has received a lot of criticism. Many of the criticisms of romance have focused on its content, including its highly formulaic stories, gender stereotypes, and its excessive erotic descriptions. Despite such criticism, romance novels continue to attract many readers, of which most are female. In addition, previous romance readership studies have mostly focused on teenage readers. However, many female readers still enjoy reading romance well into adulthood. With this regard, this study aims to understand why adult female readers of romance like to read romance novels, and how they search and choose works of romance to read in the era of the digital reading. This research aims to understand the reasons why adult female readers like to read romance and the factors that influence their choice of romance novels. This study interviewed 25 adult female readers and transcripts were analyzed based on grounded theory. Results show that female readers like to read romance for seven major reasons: reading for relaxation, temporarily escaping from reality through reading, enjoying the sweetness and warmth brought by reading, yearning and envisioning real life experiences based on story elements, obtaining comfort or salvation through the happy endings, reading for erotic stimulation, and obtaining guilty pleasure. Additionally, this study proposes a model of seeking behavior in romance based on the contextual factors, search goals and selection strategies when female readers of romance choose works. In this model, the context of the female readers would influence their search goals of romance, and the readers would adapt different strategies according to different search goals. Romance novels can provide female readers with emotional support, and can help adjust their mental/physical conditions or states. Therefore, the value and function of the romance must be recognized. Finally, suggestions for future studies are proposed, such as building a database that is categorized based on different values and preferences, so that that romance readers could rapidly find works of interest. Furthermore, this study also suggests that future studies investigate the mechanisms of pleasure throughout the readers’ transition from teenager to adulthood, as well as the meaning and appeal of heart-wrenching elements in romance novels.
