日治初期臺灣慈善音樂會初探:以臺灣婦人慈善會為例

A Preliminary Study of Charity Concert during the Beginning of Japanese Colonial Period in Taiwan-A Case Study of Taiwan Women’s Charity Association

摘要


摘要 臺灣受日本統治的明治時期是一個慈善音樂會盛行的時期。本研究從《臺灣日日新報》收集慈善音樂會的相關報導時,發現臺灣婦人慈善會即是以女性之姿在此間大量舉辦慈善音樂會的主辦者之一,且該會強調慈善音樂會的教化功能。慈善音樂會與臺灣婦人慈善會兩者雖已有學者關注,但未對兩者做更深入的探討,所以本論文將以臺灣婦人慈善會的會誌、報告書等相關資料作為第一手材料,並以《臺灣日日新報》資料庫的報導為輔,先試圖回溯新婦德的引進,並進一步探討臺灣婦人慈善會此會與其在明治時期的重要性,再從該會舉辦的慈善音樂會出發,以建構臺灣婦人慈善會與其舉辦慈善音樂會之全貌,並對其慈善音樂會內容做探討,檢視該會舉辦慈善音樂會的內容,是否真如會誌所言試圖達到社會教化的目的。 本研究發現,臺灣婦人慈善會極有可能是促成在明治時期經常舉辦慈善音樂會的因素之一,且該會成為一個完全屬於並針對臺灣活動的慈善團體,透過舉辦的慈音會為第一事業之外,更從此中分別以耳目兩者達到社會教化,不僅展現眼光所見的會場的整潔與裝飾、與會時的秩序與禮節,又使聽眾們從耳朵所聽的高尚音樂多屬各樂種的傳統音樂、帶有進步與現代化意味的西洋古典音樂的作品、有教育意味的唱歌與宣揚愛國精神的軍歌,以及展現日本傳統歷史英雄人物、展現日本帝國的軍事實力與戰爭勝利的活人畫與活動寫真。從慈善音樂會舉辦後的報導,了解當時聽眾的聽覺感受與造成日後的影響。從與會者身分看來,不僅只有中上流階層的紳士淑女,更包含一般大眾。此外,從該會成立與目地、舉辦慈善音樂會、與會者身分……等種種來看,可發現該會與其慈善音樂會皆與總督府有關係,如此可說兩者是結合在總督府之下的愛國產物。

Abstract Charity concerts were in vogue during Meiji Period when Taiwan was governed by Japan. By collecting relevant reports from Taiwan Nichi-nichi Shimpo and Kanbon Taiwan Nichi-nichi Shimpo, this research finds Taiwan Women’s Charity Association was one of the major female organizers of charity concerts then. The role of social cultivation was emphasized. Although some scholars have already been interested in both charity concerts and Taiwan Women’s Charity Association, deep discussions are not enough yet. Therefore, taking resources mainly from Taiwan Women’s Charity Association, Taiwan Nichi-nichi Shimpo, and Kanbon Taiwan Nichi-nichi Shimpo, this research attempts to begin with looking back upon the way “new female virtue” was introduced, and make a step further to discuss the important role of Taiwan Women’s Charity Association during Meiji Period. In addition to reconstructing the full pictures of charity concerts organized by Taiwan Women’s Charity Association, this research analyzes the concert programs in order to examine whether the content of charity concerts held by the association was indeed an attempt to achieve the purpose of social cultivation. This research finds that Taiwan Women’s Charity Association was likely to be one of the factors that contributed to frequently holding charity concerts in Meiji Period. It is also a charity organization that was completely subordinated to Taiwan for hosting activities. Furthermore, it achieved social cultivation by nurturing people’s ears and eyes. The public could not only see the neat and beautifully decorated concert hall and experience the order and courtesy in music concert, but also listen to rich and high-standard music, including traditional music, western classical music with a sense of progress and modernity, and songs with educational intention for spreading patriotic spirit. People could even enjoy living picture and motion picture that express the military power of Japan Empire and the triumphs of wars. From the reports on the concerts after they came to an end, we can have a clear idea of the feelings of the audience then and the influences of such concerts. Not only ladies and gentlemen in the middle and upper class, but also general public attended the concerts. Finally, from a glimpse of the purpose to establish the association and host charity concerts, and the status of the participants, this study finds both the association and the charity concerts were related to Government-General of Taiwan. That is, both are the patriotic products generated by connection with Government-General of Taiwan.
