In 2014, a large-scaled protest against the passing of the Cross-Strait Trade Agreement with China erupted in Taiwan. This movement is believed to increase the level of concern on politics and change political ideology among Taiwanese people. In this study, we address this issue empirically by analyzing Taiwanese users behaviors on Facebook, the most widely used social media platform during the movement. We first show that these users are more likely to “like” political contents after the movement. We also find that user ideology and their endorsements on politicians may change after the movement. In addition, we examined the political segregation on Facebook, and find that segregation on politician fan pages is relatively high, but we find no evidence that users became more politically segregated during that period. Our results provide some empirical evidence for an increase in political interest and change in political preference after the Sunflower movement in Taiwan.
