The Use of Design Structure Matrix for Process Understanding and Improvement Abstract It has been commonly recognized that the key of process improvement lies in better understanding of the process. In order to achieve better understanding of a process, an adequate process modeling is required. In this thesis, matrix-based modeling tool known as Design Structure Matrix (DSM) is used to model and analyze information flow in a design process. DSM analysis result reveals the most efficient sequence of completing tasks based on the information flow and identifies iteration in a design process. Decomposition is used to address design iteration. Coupled activities are decomposed into lower level activities and then intermingle them to minimize iteration. By reducing iteration process and generate efficient activity sequence, overall process time may be reduced, hence improving performance of the design process.
