This thesis develops an integrated system for automatic shapes reconstruction and texture mapping of general 3D objects. First, several images of an object are taken from the digital camera, and silhouettes of object images are calculated by a general edge detection algorithm. Silhouettes of the object are used in establishing the solid model of the object by the volume intersection method. Then, the surfaces of the 3D object are generated from triangular meshes of the solid model. The AutoCAD software are used in generating the solid model and triangular meshes of the object. Finally, the texture mapping material, formed by combining color images of the object, are warped onto the triangular meshes to form the 3D color surface of the object model. The 3ds max software is used in the texture mapping operation. An integrated program written in Visual C++ language are developed for combining operations in finding silhouettes, generating solid models and triangular meshes, and mapping the texture material. The developed program is tested in establishing color surface models of general 3D objects, and good results are obtained.
