A Method of Determining Muscle Forces in Taekwondo Front Kick via Optimization and Inverse Dynamics

Muscle injuries are common in sports. Injured muscles can affect performance of athletes. In this thesis, the case of a taekwondo front kick is evaluated. This thesis investigates the relationship between muscle forces and movements. The dynamics of a kick is analysed by motion capture. Next the profiles of both ideal and flawed kicks are defined based on the video analysed. Muscle forces is then estimated using optimization based on joint torques obtained from inverse dynamics. As observed, different profiles of kick give different muscle force patterns. This thesis determines the differences in muscle force patterns between ideal and flawed kicks. From here, it is possible that the differences can be used to determine which muscles are weak or injured. The results of this thesis provide a method to estimate muscle forces from movements performed by athletes.
