Study on Non-auditory Effects of Noise Exposure

Objective The study is to investigate on non-auditory (physiological and psychological) effects for workers due to noise exposure in occupational environment. Through study results, it is supposed to understand how sound pressure level, frequency, and variability and other characteristics of noise to influence physiological/psychological conditions of the exposed persons. Research Methods The subjects were exposed to noise in laboratory to evaluate their physiological/psychological variation by using physiological measurement system (i.e. heart rate, blood pressure), psychological load tests, subjective questionnaires and etc. Results and Discussion When the subjects were exposed to noise for a period of time, a variation was observed both on their physiological and psychological aspects. The results showed that the noise variability could affect physiological responses, the interaction of sound pressure level and frequency could also cause some of the impact on physiological aspects, while the types of noise frequency might affect subjects’ attention. Conclusion For workers and managers in noisy workplace, the results of this study may provide as a reference for workplace improvement to enhance the quality of the working environment and promote operational efficiency.
