Les Lieux of Anti-communism: A Study on Propaganda of KMT’s newspaper supplements in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand during the Early Stage of Cold War

This study, as a study on cultural cold war history, aims to discuss the rhetoric of anti-communist propaganda in the KMT’s newspaper supplements during the early stage of cold war (1950-1971), by examining Central Daily News in Taiwan, Hong Kong Times in Hong Kong and The Universal Daily News in Thailand. This study tries to explore les lieux of propaganda as a kind of invisible rhetoric. The title of this study “Les Lieux of Anti-Communism” is a reference to French historian Pierre Nora’s edited collection Les Lieux de memorie. “Lieux” is the plural form of “lieu”. In French, “lieu” can mean a place or a site, but not necessarily a place with tangible space and location. “Lieu” can refer to a geographical place, and also a “place” in many other different senses. Nora’s reflections on how every “place” is narrated in French history help this study to explore how the concept of “anti-communism” is manufactured, constructed, inherited, and even further influences today’s society. How is this concept remembered and incessantly recycled? How is the concept, as part of the cold war memories, maintained in different forms in every “place”? Since anti-communism, which seems to be a clear-cut political position, is actually a very complicated and ambiguous concept, how can we interpret our feelings about it? This study is interested in how the postwar KMT government accept U.S. government’s cultural propaganda, and when U.S. tries to intervene in the political situation, how does it resist and negotiate with this outside force, and make its anti-communist policies produce different localities in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand respectively. More specifically, this study hopes to break away from the traditional framework of cultural cold war history centered on U.S. and Soviet governments, and instead discuss how the aided countries respond to the U.S. aid from the perspectives of “cold war” and “anti-communism”. Therefore, this study focus on how newspaper supplements manufactured the patriotic rhetoric through festival writings, and how KMT and U.S. governments collaborate in propaganda wars through these supplements.
