The “Naval Battle of September 2nd” was a cross-strait naval battle at midnight near Kinmen in 1958. There are different discourses on the result of the battle, however, in Taiwan’s propaganda, it becomes the first significant victory of the Navy, comparable to that of the Army and the Air Force. To analyze this battle, this article uses the theory about image to review the low morale situation described in the archives of the Ministry of National Defense, then to reinterpret the “Naval Battle of September 2nd”. The author believes that the battle is a official-image construction process, a victory that was constructed from images, gender, celebration banquets, and monuments after the war. Moreover, this article studies the printed materials and ceremonies of the “Naval Battle of September 2nd”, arguing that these publicities essentially reflect the discipline of the Navy. This study contends that even though the result of the “Naval Battle of September 2nd” is not clear, but it is very clear that there are new interpretations with the evolution of political environment.
