教會學校在世俗化處境下的挑戰與存續:以真理大學、聖約翰科大為例

摘要


本文聚焦探討的真理大學與聖約翰科技大學兩校,其傳統分別根植於台灣本土與中國大陸,這兩者也是所有台灣教會學校的根源,教會學校雖基於或強或弱的宗教理由創辦,但是在開辦與經營時,均會遭受到世俗領域的挑戰,本文即透過社會學家韋伯對宗教與世俗關係的理念型(Ideal Type)分析,探討宗教與世俗世界(政治、經濟、知性)在教育領域產生的緊張性關係,理解其擔綱者在面臨價值衝突中做出的選擇。   研究指出,一旦教會學校創辦了之後,無論在中國大陸或台灣,都遭遇當地政權本能性的壓迫與反對,在立案資格、課程內容的政策上施壓於校方,教會配合政府的經濟發展政策,辦理工、商業專科學校,學校為了延續自身的生命,藉由獲得法人團體的地位擺脫教會的控制,但是「宗教人」擁有不計代價達成使命的心志倫理,讓他們在衝突與妥協中尋求生存之道,面對未來世俗化的諸多變局,宗教人胸中的火焰是否仍然雄旺,是否實事求是地回應挑戰,就是教會學校能否存續的關鍵。

The thesis on Aletheia University and St. John’s University is evolved from the Christian schools of the two academic traditions that were rooted in Taiwan and mainland China separately. These two traditions are also the origins of all Taiwanese Christian schools. The Christian Schools were established and based on the grounds of their stronger or weaker religious intentions, and challenged by the secular environments when they started and operated the educational institutions. The purpose of this research aims to explore the tension between religion and secular areas (political, economic, intellectual) in the field of Christian high education, and to comprehend the decisions made by the leaders under the conflicting values through the analyses in terms of the sociologist Max Weber’s “Idea Type”. This study points out that once the Christian school was founded, it would suffer from the oppression of local political power instinctively in both the mainland China and Taiwan. The government set pressure to the school through the restricted policies of filing qualification and course content and the cooperation with the government’s development in economic policies to favor industrial and commercial college. But the school would survive and adjust through getting rid of the church’s control by obtaining the status of the juristic person. However, the “Homo Religiosus” had the ethic of convicting that achieved to their mission without counting the cost so that they could seek survival in conflicts and compromises. Facing the changes in the future of secularization, whether the flames in the hearts of religious people are still prosperous, whether they respond to the challenges in a realistic manner, the religious ethic will be the vital energy to the survival of Christian schools.
