Measuring Supply Chain Management Performance: A Continuous Improvement Perspective

As the result of rigorous business competition, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Continuous Improvement (CI) concepts are seen as rules of thumb for pursuing competitive edge in many industries. Although both concepts received significant attentions in both academic and practitioner spaces, the linkage between the supply chain management performance measures and the continuous improvement on supply chain management performance has not been satisfactorily addressed. This research engaged with top managements and supply chain executives from five manufacturing firms selected from the top ten manufacturers listed in the Computer Peripherals and Components category of 2004 Top 1000 Taiwan Manufacturers published by CommonWealth magazine in the issue #322 for the in-depth interviews. Findings were derived from a cyclic grounded theoretical coding procedure that codes and classifies information collected during the in-depth interviews into categories. On the basis of these findings, cost, cycle time, financial performance, flexibility, inventory management, planning, productivity and quality were identified as the eight key performance measures that drive continuous improvement on supply chain management performance. Three driving factors emerged while the in-depth interview data were being coded and categorized. Those driving factors are supply chain waste reduction, supply chain collaboration and customer satisfaction. A framework of supply chain management performance measures that drives continuous improvement on supply chain management performance is drawn based on the research finding. The framework is composed of the key supply chain management performance measures that are linked and integrated by the driving factors to drive continuous improvement on supply chain management performance. This paper derived the base understanding on the linkage between the supply chain management performance measures and the continuous improvement on supply chain management performance; and the measures being practiced within supply chain practitioners that drive continuous improvement on supply chain management performance along the supply chain. It answered the research question ‘What are the supply chain management performance measures that drive continuous improvement on supply chain management performance?’ and provides academics and practitioners seeking for competitive vantage a framework of supply chain management performance measure with a continuous improvement perspective.
