Gesture control has gained its popularity in remote control for interactive TVs since the current technology is precise and sensitive enough to capture human ges-tures. However, there is no consistent association between the functions and their control gesture patterns among current products. Furthermore, it is not clear how the older generation control TVs with gestures since most of gesture control users are young people. In this study, the confusion matrix was used to record gesture control patterns used by participants in two different generations. We used two-stage cluster method to categorize gesture patterns associated with each specific functions with the Dice coefficients, and then to identify the highest associated gesture pattern for each function. Results showed that the overall association between the gesture pat-terns and the function is weak. It is suggested that users need to learn the association between gesture patterns and functions to be familiar with the gesture control. However, results indicated that the difference of gesture patterns used between two generations was not significant. Therefore, it is possible to integrate a set of gesture patterns for both generations. The findings of this study can provide useful guide-lines for the design of gesture control for interactive TV or other products.
