從讀者接受角度看旅遊翻譯之讀者關照

The Translator’s Concerns for the Target Readers in Tourism Translation: Perspectives from the Reader’s Reception

With the boom of tourism industry, the needs of foreign traveling information also increase. Traveling news translation provides a wide range of information about the histories, geographic features, cultures, people, customs and traditions of foreign countries, and plays a significant role of intercultural communication (Liu, 2007; Shi, 2008). Previous studies on traveling translation put main emphases on relevant translation strategies, features, and functions from the perspectives of the skopos theory and functional equivalence (Sun, 2007; Ye, 2007). However, less attention was paid to the text functions of translated tourism texts. Each tourism text has its own specific functions that is to appeal to the target readers, evoke their emotions and feelings, and persuade them through providing relevant tourism information. Only when the text functions are achieved can the corresponding purposes be fulfilled. Since the functions of tourism texts are reader-oriented, it relies on the use of appropriate translation strategies to fulfill the functions. Therefore, this paper aims to adopt functionalist approaches (including skopos theory and Nord’s theory of translation-oriented functions and reception aesthetics (a reader-centered theory) to develop a theoretical model to explore how the translator can appropriately consider the target readers during the translation process. Following this, the theoretical account is applied to two empirical case studies to examine and evaluate how the translator considers the target readers in real translation practices. The data examined in the case study covers (1) English-Chinese translation: some bilingual news texts from the on-line Taipei Times, whose topics revolve around foreign countries’ traveling information, and (2) Chinese-English translation: the online tourism articles collected from Taiwan Panorama . The source and target texts are compared carefully to identify the strategies adopted by the translator. The found translation strategies from two case studies will be compared to find out the different considerations between C-E and E-C traveling translations.
