Abstract Title: Follow-up study 2005-2015: Risk of cancer among patients with herpes zoster infection: A population-based study Author: Nicole Elizabeth Funez Thesis advisor: Chung-Chien Huang, Ph.D Objective: This research examines the association between patients suffering with herpes zoster and later diagnosis of cancer within a population. Data collected was from 2000-2005 and the follow-up study was from 2006-2015. Diagnoses were identified using ICD-9-CM codes 571, 571.2 or 571.5 on Taiwan’s National Health Insurance database totaling 47, 256 people. Method: Analysis of data using standardized incidence ratios to identify types of cancer. Results: 2,371 patients with herpes zoster were diagnosed with cancer and 98% had two underlying comorbidity. They were twice as likely to have an increased risk of cancer (standard incidence ratio 2.62, 95% confidence interval of 2.52-2.73). Conclusion: This study gives warning to patient who suffer from herpes zoster and had suffer from underlining comorbidities that there is a slight increased threat of cancer later on medical personnel should do extra examination when treating patients. Key words: herpes zoster; risk factors; comorbidity; follow-up, cancer
