The public has shown great concerns on the drug safety along with the increasing accessibility of prescription drug information. Hospitals generally print this information on the medicinal package, such as indications and cautions. Due to the limited space on the package, most of them provide general defined conditions. However, patients’ condition may be different from one to another; unified information may not satisfy patient’s requirement regarding each individual situation. Although Department of Health has established an online drug indication query database system to the public. Nevertheless, the database is full of jargon which may increase difficulties for non-medical professionals to understand the implications between medication and sickness. Therefore, in the present study we started to categorize those enlisted drug indications from the official website based on pharmacological characters in relation to diseases and symptoms, to construct two respective databases and associated relationship hierarchy - Medical Ontology. Subsequently, we cross-referenced the medical orders for each patient and applied that information to the databases in order to relate drug indications with a patient's specific prescription. The indications thereby generated are made in accordance with a patient's ongoing symptoms and diagnosis. The medical ontology of the present study could help patients be more insightful on their own medical conditions and treatments, which concomitantly ensure drug safety.
