The properties of various blending compound, poly[ethylene- co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA)/polystyrene were investigated. Four kinds of the polymeric reaction were studied in this study as follow:(i).the hydrolysis reaction of poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)]. (ii).the copolymerization reaction of 3-isopropenyl- α,α-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate (TMI) with styrene (STY). (iii). the condensation reaction of the products of part(I) and part(ii) , to from polyurethane compound, (iv). the blend of EVA/ polyurethane/polystyrene. The kinetic and characterization of each reaction is discussed in the follows. First, the objective of part (i) is to obtain various alkalize degree of EVA by replacing acetate group to OH group, the reaction time, temperature and agitation rate were conducted . The properties of EVA hydrolysis compound were analyzed by infrared Spectrophotometer (IR), element analyzer (EA) and thermogravimetry analyzer (TGA), the alkalize degree was increased with an increasing reaction time in the work. Second, the free radical copolymerization of styrene with 3-isopropenyl-α,α-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate using α,α'-azo- bisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator was studied. The reaction time, temperature and the initiator count were carried out to obtain different products. According to experimental result, the optimum operating condition was AIBN=2wt%, temperature=75℃ and reaction time=36h. Obtaining high conversion prefers to high mole ratio of STY to TMI. The Q(resonance) and e(polarity) of Aldfrey-Price parameters of TMI-STY copolymer were 0.57 and -0.14 respective. The thermal property of the copolymer increased when mole ratio of STY to TMI increased. The sequence for STY/TMI is 9/1>7/1>5/1>3/1>1/1>1/3>1/5>1/7>1/9. These copolymers were of thermal cracking temperature of 5%=195~325℃ and that of 50%=300 ~410℃. Third, The condensation reaction of the part(i) and the part (ii) product was studied. The properties of varied product were analyzed. Finally, the characterization of blending EVA/polyurethane/ polystyrene was investigated, the compatibility and mechanical properties of varied product were analyzed.
