開放原始碼社群中的遊戲專案發展之個案比較研究

摘要


電腦遊戲與開放原始碼軟體提供了一個可以讓參與者參與及集體行動的活動區域,而這兩互相獨立的電腦化運動,它以開放原始碼軟體的形式為基礎並結合電腦遊戲形成一個開放原始碼專案,而這結合在一起的專案就稱之為開放原始碼遊戲軟體。鑑於目前開放原始碼軟體發展日漸普及,大多數的相關研究多偏向少數、龐大與已經成功的專案社群上,少有研究去探討其他社群的開發情形,對於其他開發社群瞭解甚少。 本研究以SourceForge網站的開放原始碼遊戲社群部分進行個案比較研究,在開發人員組織架構的研究結果發現,遊戲開發專案會牽涉到更多領域專長的開發人員;在開發流程方面,與Yamauchi et al.(2000)提出的開發流程一致;在溝通模式方面,遊戲專案的訊息線程除了偏向回報後起始討論外,在想法與創意提出後起始討論也有較高的現象。這些研究結果意味著以開放原始碼為基礎的電腦遊戲專案發展具有一種新的分散合作模式存在。

Computer games and open source software is an active area of engagement and collective action. These two independent computerization movements clearly intersect each other. Moreover, there are well established and easy to identify segments within these intersecting movements in the form of OSS-based Computer Games projects found on the Web. Even though the community of open source software grows rapidly, most researchers concentrated on the study and analysis of those communities which are huge, and success ad hoc groups. Rare studies focus on investigating of the OSS-based Computer Games projects. Therefore, this study focuses on the OSS-based Computer Games projects, and further investigates the features of this kind of community in three dimensions, which are the division of labor, development process, and communication pattern. The data for analyzing was collected from the SourceForge, which is the world's largest Open Source software development web site, and then figured out the patterns of three dimensions by data preparation, data cleaning, and data extraction. The focus of analyses presented in this study was two OSS-based Computer Games projects, which are Crystal Space 3D SDK and Vega Strike. In addition, this study further compared the results with the Newconfig, which was analyzed and presented by Yamauchi et al. (2000). The results show that the differences between the two OSS-based Computer Games projects and the Newconfig project are in the dimensions of division of labor, and the communication pattern. For the division of labor, more interdisciplinary experts would involve in the developing game-based project. For the communication pattern, there are more responses when a proposal involved in issuing a new idea. These findings can imply a new model of dispersed collaboration in developing an OSS-based Computer Games project.
