Interactive installation art design is a new area in the domain of art and design. Artists try to use different mediums by different ways to create and present their artworks. However, due to the multi-media and cross domain features of interactive installation art design, traditional design principles and art theories cannot fit to this domain anymore. In view of this, in this research we attempt to create a new design guideline that is suitable to interactive installation design. We found that the pattern language, proposed by Alexander in 1977, can perfectly fit the requirement of the interactive installation design. In order to applying the pattern language to interactive installation design, we try to develop a set of appropriate patterns by analyzing a number of related artworks and articles in the literature. This pattern language contains several common language patterns so that the experts can share and communicate their ideas and experience during artwork design. To visualize the resulting pattern language and make it easy to use, we port our pattern language to the web to create a web-based pattern language toolkit. This toolkit allows the users to visualize and operate the pattern language via a browser and meanwhile present the relationship between patterns so that the users can decompose their idea into a piece of related patterns and re-build the idea to form a more constructive pattern diagram. By this pattern approach, the idea of the user is clarified and consolidated. Moreover, this pattern language can also trigger the imagination of user by the related works in the patterns. To verify the effectiveness of our pattern language, we have interview three artists in this area and their responses are very positive. The pattern language toolkit can effectively help the artists to realize their ideas in interactive installation design.
