Abstract Background: According to previous research, the oral health status of Taiwanese elementary school children is still a little below the standard set by WHO. Current national public health policy, including Fluoride Containing Mouth rinse, Brush after meal, National Health insurance containing dental treatment and Health-promoting school program. Material and Methods: In this study, 4416 children from 1 to 6 grade, were recruited by a stratified cluster sampling method with probability proportional to size. Subjects were examined for caries prevalence of primary and permanent teeth, filling rates, DMFT index, deft index, periodontal status, plaque index, calculus index, occlusal status, and orthodontic treatment needs. Results: In 6-year-old children, deft index and caries prevalence of primary teeth were 5.03 and 66.05%.In 12-year-old children, DMFT index and caries prevalence of permanent teeth were 2.29 and 66.96%. Among all the treatment needs, 26.18 teeth needed no treatment, 0.55 tooth needed one-surface restoration, 0.54 tooth needed two-surface restoration, 0.12 tooth needed more than three-surface restoration, 0.17 tooth needed pulp therapy, and 0.25 tooth needed extraction. Conclusion: Compared with the national survey in 2002, the dt, et, deft index, DMFT index and caries prevalence had declining trend.
