Exploring the Relationship of Social Support and Postpartum Stress amongst Postpartum women in the Solomon Islands

Background: Postpartum period is associated with many health issues relating to mothers stress and wellbeing, due to specific postpartum stressors such as maternal role, physical changes and social support. The study was purposely to explore the association between social provision and postpartum stress amongst postpartum mothers. Social support focuses on three categories including instrumental, informational and emotional or appraisal support , in which individual can receive from varying source like family, friends and significant others. Objective: To assess postpartum social support of the mothers. To assess postpartum stress of the mothers. To explore the association between postpartum stress with social support. Method: A correlation study was conduct which interview 100 postpartum mothers from Honiara city clinics. The hung postpartum stress scale determine stress level and the multidimensional scale of perceived social support assesses the social support of these women. Result: The result indicates that high postpartum stress was from maternal role related to baby care. High social support was indicated from family support for most mother. Social support was found to be inversely associated to postpartum stress (r = .21, p = .03), amongst these woman owing to the type of support given and received. Discussion: The Solomon Islands mother demographic characteristic was less related to postpartum stress, amid low education level of women and socioeconomically status of the country. Postpartum mothers stress increases thus activate their seeking support from social network and family. However, such offered support doesn’t reduce the stress level amongst mothers, therefore a further study required into investigating the function and characteristic of support received in this context.
